Everyone runs into trouble sooner or later and need help. You'd think knowing someone who's been where you're at would be the perfect solution, but you have to be careful lest you be told, "Everyone has their own path to follow. So sorry." You have to be careful that your request for help isn't interpreted as, "Gee, can you make it all happen for me?" Amazing as it may seem, some people are very suspicious that way.

On the other hand, having dealt with people who wanted me to do the work for them, I understand the why.

So, do make sure you actually need help so you don't look desperate. Do ask for help sparingly so you don't look desperate. Do use what help you get to the maximum so you don't look desperate. People will likely have more confidence in you that way.
