Thinking of Friends

Today, I am reminded of an anniversary. Virginia Yvonne Sanchez was a nurse’s aide. She devoted her time to helping others. Fifteen years ago, April 16, 2008, she was murdered. She was 23.

In 2010, her killer, who I will not name, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge in exchange for his plea, was sentenced to fifteen to nineteen years in jail. He offered no reason, no excuses. He squeezed the life out of a young wife and mother and merely said it was the worst mistake he’d ever made. He was released yesterday. By my math, that was two years early, but what do I know?

He will not be deported. Why? I have no idea. Authorities say he is being “supervised,” whatever that means. I suppose if he commits another crime, he’ll be “known to the authorities.” Well, that brings no comfort to those he hurt, who are forever changed. Hopefully he is a changed person. Only time, and God, know.
