{"id":692,"date":"2011-03-16T17:14:07","date_gmt":"2011-03-17T00:14:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/richardpnixon.com\/blog\/?p=692"},"modified":"2012-08-31T13:23:20","modified_gmt":"2012-08-31T20:23:20","slug":"the-question-of-how-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/richardpnixon.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/16\/the-question-of-how-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The Question of How, Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\">As I press onwards telling myself, \u201cI think I can, I think I can\u201d and wearing a Mike Rowe ear-to-ear grin as a show of confidence against the really intense urge to vomit, I continue to research the \u201cHow\u201d as in, \u201cHow the &lt;bleep&gt; do I get published?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\">The endless flow of advice is mind boggling. First up? Don\u2019t try to sell the book. Sell yourself instead, and the book will naturally follow. My initial reaction to this idea was, \u201cyou\u2019ve got to be kidding, right?\u201d but within moments it actually made a lot of sense especially in the larger scheme of things. But \u201cHow\u201d do you sell yourself to begin with? <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\">Well, if I had a million friends it might not be too difficult. However, out of my whopping 89 Facebook friends, barely over 1\/3 of them responded to my request to help me out, and that number has remained fixed ever since. Obviously I needed to try something else.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\">The internet had a lot of answers, but as I went through them I discovered they weren\u2019t really answering \u201chow\u201d but adding to the what. For example, \u201cUse Twitter\u201d is a what to do, not a how. When pressed on how, the answer is, \u201cbecome popular by Tweeting tips and such.\u201d Well, that\u2019s more \u201cwhat to do\u201d. Where do these tips come from? \u201cYou rip them off of other people and tweet them as your own.\u201d LOL, but sadly, that\u2019s exactly how some of it\u2019s done. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\">There are so many other suggestions \u2013 Facebook, Linkedin, a blog, etc. but they all are useful for growing an already established fan base rather than creating one.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\">As for promoting yourself instead of the book, this does make sense unless you only plan to write one book. I have another complete book written and several more in the planning\/outline stages. Promoting me will get people familiar with my name, so when my science fiction\/space opera The Peacemakers comes out, people will already know me and be eager for my work.
