“As long as you don’t get yourself ki…” The hum of a hovercar coming to a stop out front cut short his retort. “Your dad’s home.”
A few moments later John Taggart poked his head into the workshop. “Hello boys. How’s it going?” He sounded tired and preoccupied.
“Just doing some final checks Dad,” Taggart replied. “To make sure it’s stable.”
“You’re sure you know what went wrong last time?”
“Yes sir, Dr. Taggart,” Benson answered turning to his friend. “We do.”
Taggart’s dad waggled his head. “Good. By the way, do you realize how hot it is in here?”
“It’s a dry heat,” Benson said.
Taggart groaned. “I didn’t get ‘round to fixing the air conditioner.”
“Chris, you promised.”
“But Dad, the heat doesn’t even bother us!”
The elder Taggart tensed. “It bothers me.” But then he relaxed again. “Well never mind about that now. Come into the house; your mother and I have something to talk with you about.”
“Okay Dad, I’ll be along in a minute.” He waited a few moments for his father to get out of ear-shot before turning to Benson and whispering, “I’m in trouble. I just know.” He
