My impression of Meredith Hall's book so far? It's an excellent story told by a still very bitter author. So far no relief from the grind. :(
Even touching this book gave me chills given my family's history in Ireland, but I'm reading it to gain new perspective. Hopefully I'll learn something.
I thought Eric Poole's book was a good, albeit short, read. By the end, though, I wondered if being gay was that big a deal even back then. Teasing was tame.
Norman Ollestad's touching memoir of survival. A good read though filled with surfer/skiing jargon that, for me, took away from the enjoyment.
John Green's boarding school tale. This is one of the few books I was sorry was over when I reached the end. Some parts hit home for me.
Memoir & airplanes, what could be better? Unfortunate- ly, this book was a grind that didn't seem to have a major point. I hate to say it's a bad book - I just didn't enjoy it.
John van de Ruit's tales of his first year at boarding school in South Africa at the time of Apartheid's end. A good read, but some of my 'good' times were wilder.
John van de Ruit's tales of his second year at boarding school in South Africa at the time of Apartheid's end. Again, my tales are far, far wilder. Still recommended.
Four tales from the master. Excellent, though I have to say there was a huge chunk out of place that I skipped over. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the read very much.
Another boarding school tale that culminates in the needless death of a student caught up in a scandal.
Average read.
This is the story of rich family life being ripped apart by death and, well, more death.
Diana Welch told me some good info on the editing process.
A brilliant concept that got off to a very strong start before losing my interest once the brilliant concept took hold. A bit like Star Trek VI for me.
This is probably my favorite book. For me the writing is exquisite, and I've no interest in coal mining and such. Homer rocks in this book - (p.s. thanks for the kind words).
Rowling has entertained millions and deserves her rewards. However, when I finished reading this I wondered how it saw the light of day.
I don't care what anyone thinks - this is a superb history of George Lucas. People poke fun at Star Wars and Lucas without knowing just what he went through to make it.
Star Wars isn't all Mr. Lucas gave the world. This book gives you the nuts and bolts behind what some of us "home users" take for granted - e.g. NLE.
Apart from the uranium story, I thought this memoir sucked. Not a grind, per se, but it just didn't seem to offer anything. Yeah, there were some good stories but just a few.
This was an okay read. Don't recall much about it, though I'm sure it will come back to me once I look at it again.
I actually bought this for my wife and then read it when she finished. Gives good insight into why the man is a genius and why he deserves every success he gets.
Stunning.
I had hoped Hawking would give me the answer to my FTL problem. Instead I got a very enjoyable and easy to read book about space and time theory.
I didn't understand at the time that this was written after the movies. Because it was, it basically is a play of the movies but on paper.
For anyone familiar with the golden age Mr. Reiner talks about, this would be a great book. However, it was just too outside what I knew and lacked the humor I expected.
I wasn't sure what to expect, but after the travesty of Kirk's death in Generations, I was hungry for anything. The Return hit the spot though in a kind of a Klaatu way - he'll keep going but only for a bit.
Tobias Wolff tells his coming of age story in a detached way. I could relate to much of the tale which kept my interest. Easy read without real highs and lows.
L.A. Sherman's account of growing up in Bradford, England only to be tricked into an arranged marriage back "home" is both chilling and well told. Refreshing and recommend.
A self-published, often gritty tale of growing up in a Catholic family. Listed as "humor" but I found little. There is a lot of pain but, to Marie's credit, it's not all grind. Easy, quick read.
Shelli Johnson's story of a family struggle with mental illness. The writing is refreshingly tight and energetic. A heavy subject that doesn't drag you down. Recommended!
Climbing mountains with a little dog to raise money for cancer research. Nice story. Not much excitement, but some good humor, especially where Atticus is concerned.
An ode to HG Wells that I happened to enjoy despite the thin story and characters. The only thing I really objected to was the overuse of profanity - it didn't need it.
A realistic glimpse of what boarding school can be like. Not all doom and gloom, but not all fun and games either. I found much of this book resonated with me.
A book about the Troubles in Northern Ireland that does not assign blame but points out the stupidity on all sides that led to more than 3,000 deaths over more than 30 years.
A nicely written book about someone thought to be "slow" who went out and proved everyone wrong in his own kind of way.
A generally pleasant book to read. Not really an action piece, and nothing major happens though there is humor throughout.
A very misleading title. There is nothing extreme about this story. It's a sailing story
A chilling account of teenage pregnancy in the 60's. And yet it's not depressing. It's frank but also informative without being preachy.
James A. Owen's first inspirational book gives the back story of how his choices led him to where he is today.
James A. Owen's second inspirational book gives insight into some of his more personal challenges and how he never lost sight of what he wanted most.
This was an audio CD. Not being familiar with the HALO universe I was curious to see what the fuss was about. I still don't have a clue.
One in the Ender's series. I wanted to come back to Ender but this book just failed to grab me. Too much petty bickering and no real story. They're just waiting to die.
One of several Grange Hill books I've collected. I don't know for sure but I think these were written on the fly by someone watching the show.
This book had moments but the overall story failed to maintain my suspension of disbelief. I felt it was a Church piece more than Sci-Fi.
