The Peacemakers - pg4

“Right, and it had nothing to do with a pretty blond girl named Vicki, I remember.”
Taggart didn’t mind the ribbing. Benson was right; he should have seen the police long before he had. Then again replacing the undersized stock induction coils with ones of his own design should have been an easy, straight-forward task, but somehow he’d miscalibrated the power curve and nearly gotten himself killed as a result. Fortunately he and Benson had already evaded the police when the power regulator blew. “I’m not distracted this time. I’m going to win Saturday’s race.”
“Good. It wouldn’t do to have the son of Earth’s interstellar era crash and burn on account of distraction.”
“Really I’m okay. I can’t wait to give Chiu the tough luck speech for a change.”
          “About the race or Vicki?”
          “Well…” Taggart hesitated.
Benson chuckled. “Ah, just wanted to make sure of what we’re dying out here in the heat for.”
          “It’ll be worth it.”
“I hope so. Would be a shame to go through all this and…poof,” Benson said, making an explosion motion with his hands.
“If you want something badly enough you go for it no matter what.“
